     Robert L. Smith is the sole practioner at his law firm.  He has been practicing law since 1986.  He practices Family Law, Criminal Law, Probate Law, and Corporate Law.   He is licensed in Missouri and California.  He is a graduate of Poplar Bluff High School and returned to  open his local practice in 1991.     
     He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving during the Viet Nam conflict.  Upon his discharge from the Marines, he attended various community colleges, including Three Rivers College,  before getting a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley.  He attended law school at Gonzaga School of Law in Spokane, Washington.  He graduated from there in 1981 with honors and in 1986 received an LLM in Transnational Business and Taxation from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California .  He worked in corporate law before returning to Missouri.
     In his law practice, Mr. Smith attempts to treat each client and their situation as unique and not offer just a one-size-fits-all approach to their individual situations.  He takes the steps needed and the time needed to try to  bring about a successful outcome.

 Community Involvement

     Mr. Smith is active in the community of Poplar Bluff.  He is currently head of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Project and President of Black River Public Radio.  He is on the South Central MO Community Action Board and the Boys and Girls Club of Poplar Bluff of which he is a co-founder.  When he was circuit court judge in 2010, he was instrumental in resurrecting the Truancy Court in Butler and Ripley Counties.   He put in place the groundwork for a Veteran's Court before leaving office.  He is a former member of the Butler County Community Resource Council and Catholic Charities of Southeast Missouri.
      In 2016 he was recognized as a Business Today Newsmaker by First Midwest Bank and the Southeast Missourian.   He received the Outstanding Catholic Award from the Missouri Catholic Conference in 2012. 


     Robert and his wife, Dianne, are a blended family with five children.  They are members of Sacred Heart Church.  They have four dogs and one cat.
